Parts of sculptures in process.

About

I am a studio artist and educator primarily working in clay, creating sculptural ceramic forms.  My surfaces are based on microscopic organisms and natural objects. I am interested in responding to nature, not copying it. Whether seen as individuals or in a group or system, I see these pieces as part of a larger environment.

Made in both porcelain and red earthenware, the surfaces are sometimes glazed, shiny and soft, other times unglazed and dry.  Sharp and foreboding contrasts with voluptuous and inviting, much like that found in nature. They are affected by placement and scale, and interaction. Many of these pieces are "landscapes", arrangements and groupings which may vary with each installation. Where some are vignettes, others may be larger spatial compositions installed on a wall, often in response to the space occupied.

I have been adjunct faculty at The University of Akron, Cuyahoga Community College and Kent State-Stark Campus, teaching Ceramics and 3-D Design.  I also teach Clay classes to adults at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center.

My professional memberships include NCECA and Ohio Designer Craftsmen.
